Every church must have vision that is clear, distinct, and focused. This vision is what the church is to be and what the church should do. Yet corporate vision is tied to the personal vision of the catalytic leader at the helm! The developing of a personal vision is foundational to developing the ministry vision and a church vision. The same disciplines of prayer, dedication, and precision are used in both the personal and the corporate vision development.
I SAMUEL 3:1, HOSEA 12:10, JOEL 2:28, ACTS 2:17, ACTS 9:10-12, ACTS 16:9-10, ACTS 18:9, ACTS 26:19
Having a personal vision means discerning God’s will for our lives and ministry. This vision is based upon present and past experiences; understanding what God may desire to do in the future.
I. PERSONAL VISION BEGINS WITH SERIOUS EVALUATION
A. HONEST EVALUATION – HARD QUESTIONS (EPHESIANS 5:15-16)
- Where am I?
- Where am I going?
FORMATIVE YEARS → STRETCHING YEARS → SETTLING YEARS
- What are my strengths and weaknesses?
- What are my dreams?
- What are my realistic goals?
- What is it you feel God has for your life?
- What specifically would your function be in the Body of Christ?
- What are some of your inner dreams and hopes? How can these hidden ambitions become realities?
B. POTENTIAL PERSONAL OBSTACLES
- I don’t have what it takes
- I don’t have the motivation
- I don’t have the training
- I don’t have the self-discipline
- I don’t want the responsibility
- I lack the energy
- I’m not a self-starter
- I’m too old / young
- I don’t have the time
- I don’t have the money
II. THE SEVEN BIBLICAL FACTORS THAT BUILD PERSONAL VISION
A. THE HOLY SPIRIT KNOWS AND SUPPORTS YOU IN YOUR PRESENT LIMITATIONS (ROMANS 8:26)
B. THE HOLY SPIRIT INTERCEDES FOR YOU BECAUSE OF YOUR LIMITED VISION (ROMANS 8:26-27)
C. THE DIVINE MYSTERY THAT GOD CAUSES ALL THINGS TO WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD (ROMANS 8:28)
D. GOD HAS PERFECT KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE (II CORINTHIANS 12:9-10, ROMANS 8:29; 11:2, II PETER 3:17, ACTS 2:23, I PETER 1:12)
E. GOD HAS ALREADY SET BOUNDARY LINES FOR MY LIFE AND FOR MY GOOD (ROMANS 8:29-30, ACTS 4:28, I CORINTHIANS 2:7, EPHESIANS 1:5,11)
F. GOD HAS GIVEN ME AN INVITATION TO FULFILL MY DESTINY (ROMANS 8:30, ISAIAH 41:9, I CORINTHIANS 15:9, GALATIANS 1:15, HEBREWS 11:8, 1 TIMOTHY 6:12, REVELATIONS 19:9)
G. GOD HAS PROVIDED FOR ME A NEW IDENTITY BASED ON HIS WORK (ROMANS 8:30; 4:5; 5:1, GALATIANS 2:16, ROMANS 3:30; 5:9)
